Over time, exposure to the elements can cause wood fences undergo normal wear and tear, leading to issues like loose boards, leaning posts, corroded nails and screws, or cracks. Some repairs are simple enough for DIY fixes, while others require a professional.
DIY or Call in the Pros?
A well-maintained wood fence improves your home's appearance and provides both security and privacy. While DIY repairs might save you money on labor costs, hiring a professional will save you time and ensure the job is done correctly. Professionals can also identify underlying issues that you might overlook and provide recommendations on extending the life of your fence and preventing future damage.
In this blog, we'll delve deeper into the most common DIY wood fence repair tips. We'll also discuss the signs that suggest it's time to call in a professional and explain why investing in expert help can save you time, money, and frustration.
Common DIY Wood Fence Repairs
Homeowners who enjoy completing home improvement tasks can often repair simple issues on their own. These fixes require basic tools that homeowners may already have accessible. Below are three common wood fence issues that can be repaired without professional assistance.
Replacing Loose or Missing Boards:
Fence boards can loosen or fall off due to weather exposure, impact, or wood shrinkage.
What you’ll need:
Replacement wood boards (that match the existing boards)
Hammer or drill
Galvanized nails or exterior wood screws
Measuring tape
Level
Saw (if trimming is necessary)
Steps to Replace a Fence Board:
Clear the Area: Remove all weeds or foliage that has grown around the base of the fence. Remove anything attached to the board you are replacing.
Remove the Damaged Board: Use a hammer or drill to remove the nails or screws from the broken board. You may need a crowbar to pry the board loose, especially if it is nailed in.
Prepare the New Board: Measure and cut a new board to match the existing size.
Check Alignment: Use a level to ensure the board is straight before securing it completely.
Secure the Board: Attach the new board using galvanized nails or exterior wood screws.
Repeat as Needed: Follow this same process for all the boards that need to be replaced.
Fixing a Leaning Fence Post:
Fence posts can start to lean when soil shifts, posts rot, or concrete footings crack.
What you’ll need:
Level
Shovel or post-hole digger
Quick-set concrete
Tamper
Gravel
Wooden braces, stakes, or other temporary support
Hammer or drill
Galvanized nails or exterior wood screws
New fence post
Steps to Fix a Leaning Fence Post:
Remove the Post: Carefully dig around the damaged post to reveal the concrete footing. Remove the post and pieces of the damaged concrete.
Replace the Post: Insert the new post into the hole, checking that it is at the correct depth (about one-third of its length). Tip: You can use the original post if it is still in quality condition.
Set Concrete: Fill the first couple of inches of the hole with gravel. Mix the concrete and pour it into the hole around the post, using the level to ensure it is entirely vertical.
Stabilize and Cure: Brace the post with temporary supports, such as wooden braces or stakes. Allow the concrete to cure according to the manufacturer’s guidelines (usually 24-48 hours).
Reattach Panels: After the concrete is cured, reattach the fence rails to the post with nails or screws. If using fasteners, don’t overtighten them, as this can damage the post again. Reattach panels if needed.
Refill Soil: Once the panels are back in place, use the soil you dug out at the beginning to refill all holes and secure the concrete. Use the tamping tool to compact the soil and reduce movement.
Sealing Cracks and Holes:
Wooden fences sometimes crack due to weather exposure or age. While a crack can weaken the fence, many can be repaired instead of replacing entire panels.
What you’ll need:
Power washer or stiff-bristled brush
Wood filler or epoxy (for outdoor use)
Wood screws (for outdoor use)
Wood stain or paint
Steps to Seal Cracks and Holes:
Clean the Area: Use a power washer or stiff-bristled brush to clean the area with a crack or hole. Get all dirt and debris out of the crack before continuing.
Fill the Cracks or Holes: Fill the cracks and holes with a wood filler or epoxy specifically designed for outdoor use. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to apply the wood filler or epoxy. Allow to dry completely, then use a sander over the area to smooth it over.
Drill in Screws: If there is a large crack that needs extra reinforcement, use wood screws along the crack to pull the sides together. Do not overtighten, as this could cause more cracks.
Stain or Paint: To protect your fence against weather, UV rays, and excess moisture, consider applying a stain or paint. This can extend the fence's lifespan and reduce the number of cracks or holes.
When DIY Repairs Might Not Be Enough
While minor repairs can be fixed with basic tools, some repairs require specialized equipment and experience. Attempting a complex repair without the right tools can lead to further damage and increase overall repair costs. Calling a professional is the best option if you encounter any of the following problems:
Extensive Rot or Decay: If multiple boards or fence posts show signs of rot, replacing them individually may be insufficient. An expert can assess the overall structure and determine whether a partial or complete replacement is needed.
Severe Leaning or Structural Damage: A singular leaning post can usually be stabilized. If multiple sections of your fence are shifting, it may indicate that the underlying foundation is damaged and needs more thorough repairs. A professional can realign and reinforce the fence to prevent future instability.
Gate Malfunctions: A misaligned gate or broken hardware can affect the security of your fence. Professionals have the tools to replace hinges, realign posts, and adjust latches for smooth operation.
Benefits of Calling a Professional
A poorly done repair can lead to bigger problems by further damaging the fence, potentially costing you more in the long run. Complex repairs require specialized tools, materials, and techniques that most homeowners don’t have readily available. Here’s why hiring a professional fence company is a wise investment:
Expertise: Professionals have the training and certifications to diagnose issues accurately. They will ensure your fence is up to code and secure.
Access to High-Quality Materials & Tools: Fencing contractors use top-quality materials and specialized tools, which ensure a durable and long-lasting repair.
Time-Saving & Cost-Effective: DIY mistakes can lead to additional repairs and require that you put time and energy into research, buying supplies, and completing a repair. Hiring a professional gets the job done right the first time.
Warranty Protection: Many fence manufacturers require professional repairs to maintain warranty coverage. DIY work may void your warranty.

The owner is hand on. During the tornado my door hatch broke he came out and replace it in 24 hours. We have a dig and he was nice enough to put a mesh gate up so I wouldn’t have to worry about my dog. He has replaced the caps on my fence and secured them now. I highly recommend 76 Fence. The are efficient, reliable, easy to get a hold and responsive

They did an excellent job from start to finish. Day one of the estimate PJ and Candace were on time and very friendly. I explained what I was wanting and they walked me through the entire process and timeline from tear-down of my existing fence to installation. Throughout the entire process communication was excellent. From materials ordering, delivery date, installation date, I always knew what was going on. The crew showed up on time and upon completion of the project did a walk-through of the installation with me to address any concerns or questions I might have. After the crew was done they cleaned up the job site better than when they arrived.
I got four other quotes from companies. All of the prices were close to each other, so price wasn’t the issue. There were a couple of other companies that were a little cheaper in price. Ultimately what helped me decide on 76 Fence was their friendliness, the professional presentation of their quote, and communication. I felt I was in good hands which was worth spending just a little more.
